On the east side, Darvinia shares a border with the 420,080 hectare Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserva Comunal – a region dedicated by 18 villages communities to save their rare red uakari monkey from extinction. It has since been shown to be among the richest regions in the World for plant and animal species diversity ; and new species continue to be discovered. According the Minister of Agriculture, it has at least 240 species of fish, 157 species of amphibians, 65 species of reptiles, 550 species of birds, and 87 species of mammals – excluding bats – with 3 aquatic species and 13 species of monkeys.
